3rd Chinese Bridge--Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China

2. Background Introduction
CCTV International Chinese (CCTV-4) has successfully held the Haier Cup ¡°Chinese Bridge¡±--Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China in 2008 and 2009, which were warmly welcomed by the participating universities and foreign students. The competition fully demonstrated the learning achievements of 140,000 foreign students studying in China and played an exemplary role in promoting Chinese among 30 million Chinese learners over the world. The events were serialized on CCTV-4 during prime time for 10 days. Leaders of the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, CCTV and Hanban, as well as foreign envoys and ambassadors in China were present at the finals and award ceremonies being broadcast live to the whole world and highly praised the events. Now, the competition has become an annual brand event of CCTV-4. The 3rd Chinese Bridge--Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China will be held from this May to August.

3. Purpose
To provide a platform for foreign students in China to exchange their experience of learning Chinese, to help more foreigners find an effective way to learn Chinese, to give them confidence in mastering Chinese and improve their understanding of the changing China.

6. Participants
Foreign students studying in China whose first language is not Chinese with foreign nationalities.

7. Arrangement
The competition is divided into preliminaries, semi-finals and finals. Preliminaries will be held in 18 areas, including Beijing, Shanghai, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Fujian, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Nearly 100 well-known colleges and universities will be involved in the event. The finals will be held in Beijing.
¡ñ 1) Preliminaries in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan (from May 10 to June 4)
a. Each university will recommend 5 to 10 foreign students who have a good command of English listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as many other accomplishments. Registration Form should be submitted to the organizing committee before May 30 for selection. Personal videos and related materials are preferred.
b. Each university appoints a person in charge of the organization and communication of the competition. 100 winners from the preliminaries will be selected for the semi-finals.
¡ñ 2) Semi-finals and finals (August 8 to 28)
a. From 8:00 to 20:00 on August 8: registration of contestants (each host university appoints a group teacher for the contestants);
b. From August 9 to 13: opening ceremony and semi-finals (see further notice for details). After the activity, the top 40 contestants will be selected for the finals to be held in the CCTV studio hall.
c. From August 14 to 28: recording of the finals The finals will be divided into 11 parts and held in 6 stages. Content for each stage varies in form. The basic way is to answer questions in the studio with comments and evaluation from experts. After all the stages, the award ceremony will be broadcast live to the audience.

¡ñ4) August 29: the contestants return home The cost of lodging, meals and transportation for the 100 contestants to participate in the finals will be provided by the organizing committee.

8. Prizes
¡ñ Among the 40 contestants for the finals, 2 will be selected for gold awards, 3 for silver awards and 5 for bronze awards; the others will be awarded certificates.

9. Judges
The organizing committee will invite Chinese language experts, well-known scholars and actors to serve judges in the semi-finals and finals.

10.Broadcast time (provisional)
From August 19 to 28, the program will be serialized on CCTV-4 for 10 days. The final award ceremony will be broadcast live.
